Before we get into the physical changes you will be making to the space, here are some tips to get you mentally prepared to do activities unrelated to work in your office.
Tips For Switching Gears in A Multifunctional Space
Keep a Schedule
Create a morning ritual to get your day started and include your yoga practice in your morning ritual. Morning rituals help you re-energize, build focus and eliminate stress caused by the chaotic morning rush. By completing your yoga practice in a time you have set aside for yourself, you will be less likely to be distracted by work because you have given yourself permission to focus on your well-being.
Create Transitional Rituals
To separate your personal time from your work time, create transitional rituals. If you are trying to switch out of one mode, listen to some music or an audiobook, play a brain game, or call a friend. Create some sort of transitional ritual that you do every day to move from one mode to another.
Give Yourself a “Worry Time”
If you are trying to relax in a space that your normal work in, sometimes it is hard to put work problems aside. If you catch yourself thinking about a problem at work, remind yourself that you cannot solve it now, and you can worry about it during your designated “worry time.” This helps keep your mind present and reduces stress and anxiety.
Design Tips for Creating Zen Space in Your Home Office
1. Keep the space light & bright
We recommend white paint on the walls. White walls always create a clean, bright space that allows you to stay calm, focused, and motivated. White goes with everything, you can always dress up the space with art or wall hangings.
2. Incorporate storage
We love desks with drawers or incorporating bins into office spaces. When you have a multi-functional office space, it is important to be able to hide items when they are not in use. It’s not relaxing to stare at a pile of bills when you’re meditating, and you won’t want to be distracted by your yoga mat when you’re working.
3. Set the mood
Use sounds, smells, and lighting to create zen energy in the space. Turn on some meditation music, light a candle, and dim the lights. Changing these elements as you transition from work to play will also help put you in the right mindset.
4. Add plants to the space
Plants help create a zen space by bringing nature inside. They also purify the air, which will help you stay alert and refreshed.
5. Buy simple & natural furniture
Keep your furniture simple, think Scandinavian or Mid-Century Modern when it comes to desks or storage pieces. Clean lines, made of solid wood will keep your space minimal and less distracting. Throw in a cozy chair to warm up the space.
6. Decorate with soft fabrics
Cozy throws, big cushions, and a plush rug are great items to incorporate into a zen office. They are inviting and can help make it a more positive space to work by allowing you to take a few minutes out of your day to switch off, relax, and meditate.
