We’d like to show you, our favorite cheap ways to upgrade any home on a budget.
Why do we want to do this?
Recently, a friend asked us to help him choose some furniture for his new apartment. He knew what style he was going for, but what he was lost on was the layout and where to buy furniture. He also didn’t want to spend a lot of money, and we don’t blame him! Furniture prices can be scary.
He wanted to know where he should buy furniture online. It’s hard to buy furniture online on a budget. You have to spend hours sifting through sites like Wayfair and Overstock, weeding out items that don’t fit the look you’re going for. Then when you finally fall in love with an item, it’s either out of your price range or has terrible reviews!
Before undertaking the massive job of sifting through websites, we decided on the room layout and the types of items he wanted to purchase to make the room feel complete. With this list, we headed to Facebook Marketplace to see what was for sale in Los Angeles (where he is based), and we had the best time! There was so much awesome stuff for sale! In a short amount of time, we had picked out several options for every item he was looking for. The prices were unbeatable too!
Check out some of the things we came across on Facebook Marketplace!
Kilm Pillows, 2 for $95
Not a steal, but a good deal considering 2 inserts alone can cost $30+
A fun chair for $275
High-quality without the $1,000 price tag
4 leather chairs for $50
Classic Modern Design
Original Cane and Birch Wood, Made in Italy
$150 per chair for a set of 6
Industrial Coffee Table for $85
There’s a lot of awesome things about getting second hand items to decorate your home:
- You can get higher quality items for less: sometimes people just want to get rid of stuff and they’re willing to let it go for less than what it’s worth because they don’t want the hassle of moving or storing it.
- You can get lower quality items for close to nothing: if you’ve been thinking about buying some cheap furniture online as a place holder until you find a piece you love, or want to invest in, look for something second hand first. You’ll be able to take your time finding a piece you really love, and not feel guilty about saying good bye to that cheap piece of furniture when the time comes.
- Often you can resell the items for what you paid for them: keep in mind that your style may evolve! You don’t want to pass up the vintage solid oak desk of your dreams just because you spent $325 on a cheap farm-style desk the year before. Pick up that farm-style desk secondhand for $100, then when it’s time to move on, there will be a good chance that you can can resell it for the same price you purchased it for.
- You can make offers: don’t write an item off if it’s out of your price range, make an offer! You may be pleasantly surprised.
