We’ve gathered some tips for working with your children nearby, inspiration for creating space for them in your office, and our picks to help you bring your stylish, kid-friendly home office to life!
Tips for Working With Your Children in Your Office
- Create a schedule: If a routine is something that your children respond positively to, put one in place! It may not work for everyone, but having structure helps kids stay focused. They’ll be less likely to ask additional questions, or say “I’m bored,” if they know what activity is next on the agenda.
- Set boundaries: Practice setting boundaries with your children during work hours. For example, when you are on the phone, set the expectation with them that it is quiet time.
- Plan for interruptions: “Plan your work & work your plan” is something easier said than done. Plan that not everything will go to plan, and prepare for interruptions. Working at home with children is much different than working at the office with your co-workers. When you plan for interruptions, it is less likely than you will be thrown off course by them.
- Keep them entertained: Make sure they have toys and crafts to keep them entertained. No judgment here if they get a little more screen time than usual! It’s hard enough already.
- Prioritize the important: It’s important to get the most important stuff done early! The best time to do that is before the kids are even awake. If this is impossible, make sure to complete your most pressing tasks of the day early on, so you can feel accomplished if the rest of the day starts to veer off course.
- Manage your expectations: It’s not normal to work, baby-sit, and home school! You may not get everything you’d like to done, but that’s okay! The most important thing is that you are showing up everyday, not only for your work, but for your family.
Stylish,Kid-Friendly Home Office Inspiration
Let’s take a look at how these parents are incorporating their mini-me’s into their workspaces. Some of these setups you could incorporate temporally, others you may want to invest in for the long run. If you normally work in an office out of the home, when you return to commuting to work, the kid’s corner in your home office can continue to serve as their homework space.

Tips For Modifying Your Home Office
1.Give them their own desk
Incorporate a mini table with kid-size chairs. Pick out a style that matches the aesthetic of your own home office. You can never go wrong with a simple wooden table and chairs. To jazz up the desk, could paint it a sophisticated color to match the vibe of your office.

2. Create an activity station
Designate a small area of your home office as the activity station. Load it up with your child’s favorite games, electronics, and activities. You can include construction paper, glue sticks, crayons, scissors, and washable markers.

3. Add a snack station
DIY snack station will encourage your child to choose healthy snacks throughout the day, and will help minimize those “mom I’m hungry!” interruptions. This is a fun addition to the workspace that will keep you both full & focused.
